This is the 11th of Byers’ Lady Violet Carlyle mysteries, which start with Murder and the Heir. I enjoy these books very much; they’re light for the most part, but the victims are usually people who never would be missed, and the murderers get their comeuppance. In this one Vi and Jack (Wakefield, who’s been courting her from the beginning, and who married her in the previous book) return to London from a honeymoon on islands of Spain to find Martha, the sister of Vi’s best female friend, Lila, getting involved with a nasty broker of night-club acts, and the broker ending up dead. Fairly standard cozy plot, but well-written and fast-paced.
The Violet Carlyle mysteries have never wavered in quality or enjoyability. Many cozy series start off GREAT but begin to waver three or four books on, not Lady Violet.Not only a good writer, the author is very prolific. There is a new episode of adventure every month, and as I stated above they never come across as slap-dash.Also by this author are the Poison Pen Mysteries. Another unbelievably outstanding new series.
The story was okayIt wasn't the captive mystery I expected its an ok story but far from intriguing if you need to pass some time
I find this series delightfully, delicious light reading. I love the characters and the escape their adventures provide.
These books are all the same recently. It's all focused on bringing out the chalk boards to solve a crime. The police seeing this as ok and participating is unrealistic. Lila and Denny have gone from eccentric and fun to unlikable. Violet was nasty with people in this one.
